Migration History

From Paesani to Global Italians: Veneto Migrants in Australia

Loretta Baldasaar and Ros Pesman
2005
978 1 920694 501 $29.95 Pb Add to cart

From Paesani to Global Italians is a study of the migration history and experiences of emigrants from the Veneto region in Italy’s northeast. As the Veneto, which includes Venice, is today one of the most affluent regions in Italy, this book provides a contrast to rather more well-known migration stories from Italy’s south.

Although the majority of Italian migrants to Australia arrived in aftermath of the Second World War, emigration from the Veneto (home to most northern Italians journeying to Australia) actually began in the late-1800s. Full of vivid character portraits and quotations, From Paesani to Global Italians explores the contribution made by northern Italian migrants to their new homeland, their settlement experiences and their continuing links with their ancestral homes.

From the frontier mining camps of Western Australia to the cane fields of North Queensland, Italian migrants have made an extraordinary contribution to our nation’s history. From The Mountains To The Bush records the experiences of Italian migrants to Australia between 1860 and 1953, reproducing their heartfelt letters home to family and friends to illustrate the many adventures, hardships and discovers of their new lives half a world away from their ancestral homes.

‘...the crowning achievement of her life's work and likely to be an instant classic.’ - The Australian

‘The glory of this fine book is Templeton's eloquent voice – lucid, assured, compassionate.’ - Australian Book Review

‘Templeton’s ‘magnificent obsession’ has produced a book of revelations about the true nature of Italian migration to Australia. These are epic tales, meticulously researched, yet full of the romance, the hardship, the adventure, and the everyday realities of countless immigrant journeys as seen from both sides of the ocean. Templeton’s use of letters creates a mosaic of authentic voices that help us understand what we can become, as a nation, if we embrace both our immigrant and indigenous pasts.' - Arnold Zable

Milk And Honey - But No Gold is the story of the many 'New Australians' who joined the nation’s mass migration scheme in the years following World War II. From the immigration selection process, subsequent long sea voyage to Australia, the search for accommodation and work upon arrival and the psychological, physical and emotional hardships associated with resettlement, Milk And Honey – But No Gold is a treasure trove of oral histories, period photographs and illustrations.

‘...an exceptional contribution to our understanding of migrant experience. This spotlight on two critical decades deserves a wide general readership and a place in every library.’ - The West Australian
