Provocations: Submission Guidelines About Provocations
UWA Press invites all members of Australia’s academic community to participate in Provocations – a short, ideas-based book series the Press plans to debut in 2009.
We’re eager to hear from new and established academics wanting to voice opinions on issues of national and global importance. Be they social, economic, political, legal or environmental topics (or any combination thereof), our aim is for each Provocations title to make immediate impact on the culture of public policy and thought in this country.
As a university-based publisher, UWA Press sees Provocations as a unique means by which to: (i) find and promote a new generation of erudite and media savvy public commentators; and (ii) add value and profile to Australia’s abundant academic excellence.
If you believe you have the talent and craft to make it in an increasingly competitive publishing marketplace, then we’d like to hear from you. And as the series title suggests – be provocative! Help us push the boundaries of public discourse in Australia and beyond.
What We’re Looking For • Original, well-crafted manuscripts (25,000 – 40,000 words in length) with strong points of view on topical subjects and themes • Writers with an engaging style, distinctive authorial voice and ability to distil often complex issues into narratives which have the potential to attract both general and specialist readers • From manuscript submission to publication, writers willing to work on a fast-tracked production schedule (4 – 6 months duration) • Writers who will be in Australia at time of publication and available to work with the Press’ marketing and PR staff on a national promotional campaign to support your release.
What We’re Not Looking For • Re-purposed research papers or PhD theses (please refer to the Press’ website for publication opportunities in these categories) • Work that has been previously published elsewhere or in another media (whether whole or in-part) • Manuscripts of more than 40,000 words in length or requiring high photographic and/or pictorial content (these are, unfortunately, beyond our Provocations budget parameters).
Submission Process
We require all writers to contact the Press’ Editorial Manager, Kate McLeod, to discuss their proposal prior to submitting a manuscript. In this way we can provide you with preliminary feedback regarding your submission; save everyone time; and, dare we say, unnecessary disappointment.
Kate can be contacted on +61 8 6488 8565 or via e-mail.
In 2008, there will be two Provocations submission rounds. UWA Press must receive completed manuscripts by the close of business on:
Round 1 Friday 28 March, 2008
Round 2 Friday 29 August, 2008
The Press’ Editorial Advisory Committee will then assess all submissions. All writers will be notified of the Committee’s decision within six weeks and, if successful, will be offered a contract to publish (subject to good faith negotiations between the parties).
